My mage is so underpowered that...

[:1]
My mage is so underpowered that I lost to a critter.

My mage is so underpowered that I tried to solo a mob and couldn't gain aggro.

My mage is so underpowered that A Basik Campfire does more damage than my fireballs.

inb4 really doesn't work if you're the original poster. Just sayin'...
If this thread was trying to be clever, it should at least be reversed.

My Mage is so overpowered.. etc.

Sindee, even your silhouette avatar is scary! :o

Improved Hot Streak Really worth it?

[:1]I'm curious as to what the actual probability of hot streak without improved hot streaks chance of proccing is. Cause unless you have really really high critical strike chances, getting 2 consecutive crits doesn't happen terribly often. by comparison to arcane mages who get a arc missile every 3-4 casts which hits for almost as much as pyroblast. Cause i'm thinking of scrapping improved hotstreak so that it has a chance to proc on individual crits rather than 2 consecutive ones. Any thoughts/# numbers on it?

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r120/nkthrasher/graphs/procs_vs_cr.jpg

That is a good approximation of the proc chance per crit and per cast (expressed as a decimal, a 0.5 chance for example would be one proc per two events, a 0.25 one proc per four, etc).

Imp HS is worth it in the end, but probably not while leveling up unless you need it to get to the next tier of talents.
Yes It is worth it. The tier 3 hot streak happens less and less often as your crit rating goes up. Meaning at some point you will have so much crit where you will hardly ever see it happen. Thus you will need the Improved Hot Streak in order to do any real damage as a fire mage.

Might have made a mistake...

[:1]When cata came out i made my mage a worgen...this might have been a mistake because the racials are not really helpful. I'm looking at becoming a Draenei maybe because if the hit increase and was wondering if anyone had some input on what I should be?
horde
Undead Horde mage that has 2 fear counters in instances, whats not to love.
I would make him a horde but all my friends are alliance...so i need to stick to an alliance race.
Worgen. If you don't think 1% crit is a benefit, reroll another class.

New Mage, New Questions.

[:1]Hey all,

I am making my mage here my primary character, part of my leveling plan is to include pvp. In BG, where is my concentration best placed? CCing? For that matter, I want to learn to PVP, as it a nice break from PVE at times, what is the best place to go to to learn how to, in addition to actually PVPing?

Next question is on priorities. At what lvl does actually following spell priority make a difference? At the moment, though while only soloing, I tend to start with frostbolt to slow them down, then from there it depends on if my arcane missles are triggered or not.

Sorry for sounding like such a noob, but... well, when it comes to being a mage, I kinda am. But am enjoying it a lot more then I ever did my warlock.

Is frost PvE dps reasonable?

[:1]As the title sais.

I'm no expert at PvE, but I PvP alot as frost. As such, I'm accustomed to frost and don't want to mess around with a different spec for PvE unless it's necessary.
Well played Frost PvE is within 5-10% of Fire's output. So yes.
It sure is. Getting nice deepfreezes for 130k+ is always fun..although that high is rare but a quick coldsnap and you can try for it again! Just make sure if its in the beginning of the fight to have your images out =)
Yes its great.

I never saw this anywhere showing how to play frost but I was watching the Ensidia Nefarian(I think that's the name) video and basically the mage followed the normal rotation however instead of icelancing away FoF he would wait till he got 2 stacks and do a Frostbolt with an Icelance at the end of it. (You can trade icelance with FFB or DF, though he may have just used these when they popped I couldn't really tell)
Interesting. Why cast a FB rather than an Icelance in that situation? Seems like thats a DPS loss. FB hits slightly harder but Icelance hits nearly as hard and is an insta cast.
frostbolt doesn't even benefit from FoF...

he probably just used FB to avoid losing casting time due to server latency. you kinda get screwed over if you use 2 instants in a row because you can't queue them properly.
It is considered more beneficial to always keep at least one FoF charge up at all times in case Deep Freeze comes off CD or Brain Freeze procs. You should only go down to 0 FoF charges when your pet's Freeze comes off CD or if your FoF is about to expire.

Coming from a mage from Ensidia, it is really not surprising, as he would totally do everything to get the maximum damage output.

PvE Cloak Enchants?

[:1]Anyone done the math for:

Lightweave Embroidery vs +50 Int vs +65 Crit?

Couple of frost mage questions

[:1]Hi there, first off, ill make this simple. Im really trying to get good Dps, and trying my best in heroics and such, and I love the frost tree. I really dont enjoy fire or arcane. Secondly, dont pay attention to my talents, Im redoing them atm and im using the cookie cutter spec in the forum sticky for raiding mages. Also, I know im wearing some spirit gear and such, but im still trying to reach hit cap.

Question 1: How is my reforging, i've reforged most of my items into hit rating because I know I need it maxed.

2. My glyphs, I know theres something wrong with them, but I got really overwhelmed looking at all the glyph choices in the forum stickies and such, so some tips there would be welcome.

3. DPS- At the gear im in now, doing the correct rotation (God I hope I am) in your opinion's what should I be pulling? Cause im going to be putting out there, and maybe im a bad mage, but I was pulling barely 6k on a boss training dummy. And barely 7k on an 87 training dummy.

I really appreciate you looking at my thread, and if any tips could be given to me personally, I just got really overwhelmed looking at the forum sticky. I do thank you again.
First off, frost is highly inaccurate on training dummies because you can't use deep freeze's damage portion on them (they are stunnable/freezable). In boss fights DF usually makes up about 20-25% of your damage, so that's a big chunk you're missing out just hitting dummies.

Also, if you're only going to be doing heroics for the near future, don't stress about getting 17% hit cap. 6% is enough to never miss in heroics, and save any +hit pieces you get to swap in when you're ready to raid. In the meantime, focus on getting as much crit as you can; mastery and haste are about equal to each other, but both are lower than crit.

As for glyphs, you'll want DF, FFB, and frostbolt, or if you're ok with mana and can stay in molten for entire fights, glyph it for the extra 2% crit.
I thank you for the help. I've done my spec, and i've updated my Glyphs, and i've read alot on the stickies too as much as they confused me. and I managed to, on a training dummy end up getting a top of 7.5k On them. and I see they are inaccurate as you say. Im really trying to just get geared up in heroics then attempt to try and take on a raid, but most likely pugging it. If I can. :) Thank you.
I'm no where near an expert but I've been raiding frost this expansion as I just haven't enjoyed fire much.

As it's already been said, when gearing in Heroics I tried to evaluate items based on the following priorities:
Int
SpellPower
Hit (To cap)
Crit (To soft cap, which you'll never reach in Heroic gear)
Mastery
Haste

Try not to reforge crit away. Either Mastery or Haste (spirit first if you get stuck with some) are much better to reforge to Hit.

My rotation on bosses:
MI+Pot+IV
FFO
Freeze
DF
Cold Snap
DF
FFO
FrB until FoF Proc
FFB w/ Brain Freeze and FoF
IL w/ 2 stacks of FoF

I typically don't use IL if I only have 1 FoF charge. I'll bank it and wait for a BF-FFB. If I get 2 FoF charges I'll burn one with a IL unless DF is coming off CD soon and Freeze is on CD.

Not sure if your talents/glyphs have updated on Armory since your post but you should have:
Primary:
FFB
DF
FrB
Major:
Your choice, I use
Evocation (comes in super handy to heal yourself)
Icy Veins
Ice Barrier
Minor:
Conjouring
rest are your choice

I've seen a few specs floating around but you want to make sure you use the one that specs into Ignite.

GL, I really hope blizzard doesn't kill off Frost Raiding like they are planning to do in 4.0.6. every day I check patch notes hoping for a small buff to frost to keep it in the theoretical ball park as fire.
Thanks for the tips even though i just started be a mage these realy help me pick a spec
