I'm tired of being forced to go frost for PVP

I am so tired of frost being so good for PVP, and fire being good for PVE!

Why can't we have 3 mediocre specs that are each "just good enough" for both PVP and PVE.

I mean, i dont mind sitting at 1500 rating, i still get points! I dont mind sitting at the bottom of the DPS charts, we still kill the boss (and i get the loot after whining and paying people off).

So because my opinion is the only one that counts, i am demanding that blue nerf all specs of mages in the ground, so they are on par with priests.
Oh yes, and if you don't, i'm threatening to cancel my account. You will surely regret not having my 15/mo.

(You wont get to buy that new server you've been eyeing).

He has a point though..

Cata Leveling spec

This is my first character and im still pretty noob atm seeing how fast it is to get here. My friend is telling me that since the mobs in cata have A LOT more hp i should switch to frost. I was wondering if that is necessary and if its that much easier then arcane is for questing??
I had zero downtime leveling as Arcane. As in, I never once stopped to drink. The only time I ever stopped was a result of PvP, not any questing.

The real answer is, of course, play what you like. But Arcane has no downtime.
I leveled as fire myself, and have started messing around with frost as of change pace for soloing, and basically I wish I would have listened to everyone that told me level as frost.

I still like fire more in dungeons, but frost is incredibly fun while soloing, and for me the I have less downtime because it's so easy to avoid damage so I never have to restore health. But most are probably better then me at avoiding damage without frost anyway tbh.
I leveled as fire but I regret not doing it as Arcane. Sure arcane is more boring, but it's definitely more effective than fire imo.
I'd like to level as Fire as it's going to be my inevitable PvE and PvP spec but at 80 right now Arcane is just really, really good. It's my dual spec though, I'll keep playing with it, since I love it when things go boom.

Is it true mages won't have port anymore?

I heard somewhere that Mages were going to lose the ability to cast Portals, and only have the self-teleport ability for themselves. Is this true? I tried searching for this information online but came up dry.

If you're confirming this, please provide a link. Thanks!
There's no link for this information, as mages are NOT losing portals. The only portals being affected are those in Dalaran and Shattrath. Reasoning behind this is so that players don't keep their hearths in these cities as these are the major hubs for the previous 2 expansions.

Blizzard loves mages, and wants them to make more money. So, mages keep their portals, and the free ones are gone.

For mages this can spell profit, or annoyance... "prt to sw nao!" and such in whispers.
You probably heard that from a very bitter person who doesn't have a mage.
No we are not losing it.. however here is a helpful guide

step 1: Find a lazy degenerate
step 2: summon them a portal
step 3: PROFIT!!??!!??!!

How good does your gear need to be to go fire

Fire Orb Direction - Intended?

This has probably been beat to death, but the forum search is dismal.

When using Fire Orb, it seems to shoot off in the direction my mage is facing when it was cast instead of heading towards my current target. Even in a fight with just one opponent (boss) if I am not facing the boss, the orb will shoot off to the side and do no damage. Is the orb just buggy or is this the intended mechanic?

If either can we get a fix/change. I would like to cast this while on the move, but if I have to aim to...
It is intended to head in the direction you are facing. If it heads straight to a target its a glorified DoT, if it heads in a direction of your choosing it is usable in creative ways "Leading" the target and so on.
Intentional. If you need to fire the orb in a different direction than you're going, may I suggest strafing or a spin jump cast?
yeah, it goes in a straight line.

have to aim it
I just wish it fired beams at EVERYONE like that boss. :(

Transitus Shield

I was questing in Coldara, and happened across the Transitus shield. And thought, this would be a pretty awesome Mage ability, perhaps as a temporary stealth or even a group stealth. Mages already have invisibility and they use it in the game.

This probably won't happen, but it would be awesome! I mean, who wouldn't want to stealth the entire raid during AV?

But are you really stealthing the party. The enemy are going to see that shield and know that SOMETHING is under there. Also, it's a static shield. I'm sure if those mages in Coldara were to move, the shield would not remain. And did you see how many mages are necessary to keep the shield up?

Yeah, would be an interesting mechanic, but I can't see it making it into the game.

I can't either, but I was assuming a mini-shield that was small enough for one mage to hold up and could be mobile, but could fit your party in it also. The main mechanic of my idea was that the enemy is obviously going to know that there's something in the shield, but they wouldn't know what or how many would be in the shield? This causes them to think and plan strategically for what could be a surprise attack or a decoy.

Obviously, that would be overpowered.
Rogues have smokebomb which is similar to your idea. I could see this ability in some form or another eventually.
It actually would be kind of fun. I could see it being a channeled thing, and used maybe to protect a healer from aggro in a raid, or to protect a flag in AB/WSG.
it'd be just like a protoss mothership!
Can't see anything inside it, but you can see the cause for invisibility (the bubble/mothership).

Arcane Missles: Are they worth it for PvP?

I personally don't think so, they do so little damage in PvP, especially compared to our hard hitting Arcane Blasts. On top of that to even make them somewhat worthwhile, you have to spend 4 points to increase the missle count and the speed, which could be used to get other talents
In PvE they have a purpose, I can see that, they are used not so much as a damage component but more so as a mana conservation effort to reset your stack, but in PvP, unless you are involved in a big, long fight, the chances of running out of mana are slim to none if you are well geared.
I don't know, I'm kind of torn, discuss.
AM are great for low HP runners

Yes but I rarely run into low HP runners, it's normally low HP after the first AB and by that time they don't have enough reaction time so the second one kills them lol
They are definitely not worth talenting for anymore.
Maybe not an 80, perhaps at 85 though.

AM are really symbolic of the spec though, Blizz will probly buff them up to speed or make them desirable to use.
Supposedly arcane PvE is fail @ 85 so there is a chance.
If your Arcane in PvP you shouldn't be casting a whole lot of spells cause most targets die in 2 to 3 hits. Better to use the stacks of AB cause after 2 stacks they hit pretty hard. I do Arcblast PoM Arcblast into a Ab if they are not dead after the second one. if they are cast slow on the next target and 'pew pew' double kill for you son
