Having a brainsplosion..

[:1]I suffer from chronic altitis.. It has plagued me since the first RPG I played consistently... Diablo 2. My disease is incurable, but this orc mage is helping.

I'm sure this will be the last time. Of course I say that every time a new expansion hits the shelves.

To the point, though. I've always played the healer with my group of friends and still enjoy being the fiber that keeps us alive in pvp, but there's this strange itch.

I've played a mage to 45 before back in classic.. took about a week and never picked him up again. Then they let me make an orc!

Half of my brain is trying to convince me to throw everything to the wind and abandon it all to play a caster, something I've almost no experience with. The idea to be a flame and arcane wielding nutball has me interested.

My problem is that when I play a pure DPS (Hunter) I tend to get bored and quit WoW completely. The idea of being an expert mage is far more appealing than the hunter, at the aesthetics.

Without knowing anything more about my personal playing habits, can you sell me on the mage? Enough to forsake my core love of being my group's pet healbot? Really looking to end this streak of altitis as getting older allows for less time to indulge in my more wasteful pleasures(WoW). SAVE MEH!
Why aren't you playing a druid? That way you can just respec when you get the alt playstyle urge.
Well considering that's the class I'm debating over whether I continue or not, it complicates things.
Oh, if you're the type who can't say no when someone needs a healer, it's probably best to play a class that can't heal. So yah, give the mage a shot. It's a powerful class too.
If you could imagine a packaged kitten jacked up on catnip, that's about the level of fun I have with my mage.

I've doddled with all three specs in nearly every aspect of play, and each one is very fun for me. The idea of having to be clever to survive on your own really appeals to me as a player, and it's a big component of leveling and soloing. It comes into play in PVP too, but less so, since healers (like yourself!) run around helping everyone out.

Arcane is your huge numbers spec these days. If you love seeing high 5-to-6-digit damage numbers in a raid, this is your baby. The playstyle gets a little boring if you do it long enough, since you basically spam arcane blast until your mana hits a certain point, but those numbers more than make up for that in my opinion.

Fire is your "OMG MUST BLOW UP STUFFZ" spec. It does very good damage, but your initial damage numbers won't be nearly as high as Arcane. It's become more of a DoT spec than it used to be, which is great fun if you like to watch your opponents burn. Living Bomb, Pyroblast, Ignite, Combustion - those combined drop things quick. Combined with the Impact proc and just giggle as packs of mobs asplode and just drop. Not to mention, Dragon's Breath is probably one of the coolest animations in-game.

Frost is probably the funnest spec to play right now. It's very proc-based now and can be extremely over-powered if played correctly (in PVP). In PVE, it's still lacking a tad and falls behind a little in raids, but that will matter less at 85, since Frost will do better at the lower tiers (the other two scale better with gear, though). Frost is all about control, so if you like to dominate your opponents by preventing them from doing anything, this is your thing. Freeze, Stun, freeze some more, pew pew, freeze some more, pew pew more, etc. I giggled my pants off when dueling a rogue a week ago or so, popping Ice Barrier, letting him open up to get out of stealth, Blink out of the Kidney Shot, Pet Freeze him, Ice Lance, Deep Freeze, 3 more Ice Lances. He then used Vanish, to which I tried to Cone of Cold him (missed), then Frost Nova'd him out of it and Ice Lanced him again. He never took any health off my bar.

I dunno, I'm a terrible salesman.
